Guwahati: The Assam government has started precautionary steps in Guwahati as heavy rain is expected in the next 48 hours.

Chief Secretary Ravi Kota met senior officials on Saturday to review the situation and check how prepared the city is. All departments have been told to keep equipment and emergency teams ready at all times.

More than 300 areas have been marked as sensitive for landslides, and officials are keeping watch on these locations. Awareness activities are also being carried out in such areas.

Work is underway to clean major drains, check pumping systems, and fix safety measures along the Bharalu river and other drainage lines. Open drains and manholes are being secured, and warning barriers are being placed where needed.

Traffic arrangements are also being planned in advance to handle road blockages if water collects on streets.

The Guwahati City Traffic Police said traffic jams may increase if roads go under water, and alternate routes are being kept ready.

Officials from the India Meteorological Department, Assam State Disaster Management Authority and district teams shared weather updates and discussed response plans, with a focus on coordination and regular monitoring.

Drainage systems in areas like Silsaku, Juripar, Bharalu, Bahini, Basistha, Pamohi and the Jorabatโ€“Byrnihat route were also checked. Roads such as Jalukbariโ€“Gorchuk and areas near major hospitals were reviewed to see if water can flow out properly.

The Guwahati Municipal Corporation and Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority have been asked to keep pumping machines running throughout the day and night.

People have been advised to avoid flooded places, stay away from open drains and landslide-prone areas, and plan their travel carefully.

Officials said cooperation from the public will be important during the rainy period.
