Guwahati: A man from Dhubri, Assam was arrested by the police for allegedly duping people through social media in Baithalangso, West Karbi Anglong on Saturday.
Police arrested Umar Faruk on Saturday for allegedly hacking a Facebook account and scamming a friend for Rs 20,000 in Baithalangso, West Karbi Anglong.

Faruk reportedly gained access to Hemanta Nath’s Facebook profile by using a phone number recently assigned to him, which coincidentally was Nath’s old number.

Posing as Nath, Faruk contacted people on the friend list and requested money.

While most were cautious, one person, Arun Nath, sent Rs 20,000.

Alerted by the suspicious activity, Hemanta Nath filed a complaint at the Baithalangso police station.
Following an investigation, Faruk was traced to Dhubri and arrested.
He confessed to the crime and admitted spending the stolen money, said a police source.
