Police on Thursday night arrested one Gobin Sarma in Harmutty in Lakhimpur district in Assam for allegedly raping two minor girls.

The incident took place in No. 2 Parbatipur village near Banderdewa. The accused was caught by locals when he tried to rape a 13-year-old girl inside his Tata Magic vehicle on the banks of river Dikrong.

According to the girl, the accused had taken her along with her elder sister from the bus stand at Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh’s capital as they waited for travelling to Namsai.

“We were waiting at the bus station in Itanagar for our journey to Namsai when the person approached us to take us to Banderdewa to get the bus to Namsai,” said the teenager.

“We believed him and sat on his vehicle,” the girl added.

The teenager further said that the accused first raped her elder sister and dropped her from the vehicle somewhere on NH-15.

Later, as told by the younger victim, Sarma dragged her to the bank of Dikrong and tried to rape her when some locals noticed and caught him.

Gobin Sarma was later arrested by police from Harmutty Police Outpost.

Though the young girl has been under police protection since then, the whereabouts of her elder sister is still not known.

Meanwhile, on Friday in North Lakhimpur, the Lakhimpur District Congress took out a protest rally against the manhandling of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and stopping of UP Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi by police as they tried to visit the Hathras rape victim’s family.
