In a major breakthrough, the Makum Police in Tinsukia district (Assam) in association with the 68 Bn of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) seized around 900 grams of ‘brown sugar’ besides arresting three drug peddlers including a dealer in Makum on Wednesday evening near Tinsukia Bypass under Makum Police Station.

According to Bhaskar Saikia, Officer In-Charge (OC) of Makum Police Station, a case 247/18 has been registered U/S 21(C) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Investigations were on till the time of filing of this report.

Based on a tip-off, the joint forces intercepted an Alto car on the Digboi-Makum Road (National Highway [NH] 38) heading towards Makum and recovered the ‘brown sugar’ which was in the possession of the three peddlers – Lakhi Neog of Bordumsa Miholi Ritu Village, Tomba Ali of Miao and a  female peddler – Dipti Bora of Bordumsa town. All the peddlers are from Arunachal Pradesh.

The market value of the seized drug is estimated to be around Rs 8 lakhs. Sources informed that the ‘brown sugar’ was being ferried to be delivered to a “regular customer”. Police sources added that a huge quantity of drug consignment from Dibrugarh had entered the said area couple of days back for delivery in the Assam-Arunachal border areas – Digboi, Bordumsa, Jagun, Kharsang and Miao.

Meanwhile, the Superintendent of Police (SP) Tinsukia, Mugdhajyoti Dev Mahanta, while lauding the efforts of Makum Police said that the drug menace could be arrested only when people across the society support the security forces as well as the organisations that are carrying on a crusade against drug peddlers and drug addiction – in which many of our youths have got trapped today.
