Two wild elephants had to lose lives due to lightning strike in the Lankajan Dorjeesheet area under Hojai district along the Hojai-Karbi Anglong border on Sunday night.
According to information, the two elephants came down from the forest in Karbi Anglong district in search of food and were moving in the Lankajan Dorjeesheet area but died at night due to lightning.
While one of the elephants is a mature male elephant, the other is a male elephant calf, aged 10 to 12 years.
In the morning, the villagers found the elephants dead a sugarcane field in separate places. The immediately informed it to the Forest Department.
Injury marks have been found in the head of the mature male elephant.
A joint team of Forest officials from Hojai and Lanka rushed to the spot and made arrangement for conducting post-mortem of the elephant by a veterinarian.
It has been suspected that both the male elephants died due to lightning.
Death of the two elephants after coming out from the forest to the plain area in search of food has descended a pall of gloom among the animal lovers in the area.
As the news of the death of the elephants spread in the area, a large number of villagers gathered at the spot to have a view of the wild elephants.
The locals also informed about lighting strike on Sunday night.
