A life-size statue of Dharma Narayan, the founder of Koch Kingdom in Darrang, was unveiled on Sunday on the bank of Borpukhuri at Mangaldai town in Darrang.
The statue was ceremonially unveiled by veteran writer, journalist and former president of Asom Sahitya Sabha, Kanak Sen Deka.
The statue is 15 feet in height and around one tonne in weight.
It was sculptured by Assam’s renowned sculptor Biren Singha with financial support of local entrepreneurs’ group Debsons and Company.
The ceremony was attended by several prominent persons including Mangaldai MLA Gurujyoti Das, distinguished writers Anuradha Sarma Pujari, Dr Nagendra Nath Sharma, Idrish Ali, Dr Lohit Baisya, sculptor Biren Singha and senior director of the donor group, Dr Amarendra Narayan Deb among others.
This was followed by a public function at the same venue.
Earlier on December 20 last, Darrang deputy commissioner Dilip Kumar Borah laid the foundation stone of the statue.
King Dharma Narayan ruled Darrang from 1606 to 1633.
