A police constable has been killed in a road mishap at Dalgaon after drums filled with bitumen fell on him at Dalgaon Chariali in Darrang district.

The deceased, Abu Bakkar Ali was a member of the night patrolling team of police.;

According to police sources, the accident occurred at midnight  on Saturday when a truck carrying drums filled with bitumen turned turtle on National Highway-15 while trying to drive past a sharp curve at Dalgaon Chariali.

The drums fell on Ali, who was on duty in the area, thus seriously injuring him.

He was rushed to the Mangaldai Civil Hospital, where doctors referred him to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Guwahati.

He, however, succumbed to his injuries at the medical college.

The truck bearing the registration number AS 05C 7923, was on its way to Guwahati, when the driver lost his control over the vehicle and hit hard on the divider in the middle of the road.

“Bitumin drums falling from the truck hit Abu Bakkar Ali, who fell down on the road and sustained a grievous injury,” said Giyasuddin Goni, officer-in-charge of the traffic branch of the Dalgaon Police Station.
