DIBRUGARH: Khalistani separatist leader Amritpal Singh, who is currently lodged at the Dibrugarh jail in Assam, secured a significant victory from the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha constituency in Punjab.

On Wednesday (June 04), Amritpal Singh’s wife, Kirandeep Kaur, visited him at the Dibrugarh central jail in Assam to congratulate him on his electoral success.

Accompanied by advocate and former Punjab MP Rajdeo Singh Khalsa, Kaur met Singh at the Dibrugarh central jail in Assam.

Amritpal Singh won the Khadoor Sahib seat with a commanding margin of 1,97,120 votes.

Speaking to the media, Rajdeo Singh Khalsa stressed on the priority of securing Amritpal Singh’s release from jail.

“We have discussed the strategy, but first and foremost, his release is crucial. We are taking all necessary legal measures for his release,” said Khalsa.

He said: “The government should soon release him, as there is no alternative for the AAP and BJP governments. The Sikh community voted for him because they see leadership qualities in him and believe he can address Sikh issues.”

Khalsa also highlighted Amritpal Singh’s efforts to combat drug abuse in Punjab through his Amrit Sanchar initiative.

“He was doing a good job in Punjab, but the Bhagwant Singh Mann-led AAP government conspired against him, leading to his false imprisonment. His arrest was unconstitutional and unlawful, a conspiracy for political gain,” he added.

“His victory from the Khadoor Sahib constituency proves that people support him,” he said.

Amritpal Singh, who ran his electoral campaign from an Assam jail, received 4,04,430 votes, surpassing Congress candidate Kulbir Singh Zira, who garnered 2,07,310 votes.

The Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Laljit Singh Bhullar came in third with 1,94,836 votes.

Amritpal Singh was arrested last year following a massive crackdown and charged under the National Security Act (NSA).

He has been held at Dibrugarh central jail in Assam since April 23, 2023, along with nine top aides, including Papalpreet Singh, Daljeet Singh Kalsi, Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal, Varinder Singh Johal, Gurmeet Singh Bhukhanwala, Harjit Singh, Basant Singh, Gurinder Singh Aujla, and Bhagwant Singh alias Pradhan Mantri Bajeke.

All face charges under the NSA and other criminal offenses.
