The Deputy Secretary of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Town Committee Affairs, Michel Timung at a press conference in the evening of Monday declared the schedule for Town Committee elections for Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts of Assam.

Polling will be held on January 8, 2019. Last date for filling of nomination paper is December 28, 2018 while scrutiny is scheduled on December 29, 2018 and the last date for withdrawal of nomination is December 31, 2018.

In case of re-polling, it will be held on January 9, 2019 and result will be declared on January 10, 2019.

The Town Committees for which elections will be conducted are Diphu, Bokajan, Bakalia, Langhin, Dokmoka, Howraghat, Donkamukam, Hamren and Baithalangso.

Previously there were seven Town Committees in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts. Last year Langhin and Baithalangso were added to the list making it to nine Town Committees.

Meanwhile, prospective candidates have started lobbying with the ruling district party presidents of the Bhratiya Janata Party (BJP) from three months back for the much awaited Town Committee elections in the twin hill districts of Karbi Anglong.

The election will be a test of the popularity of Chief Executive Member (CEM) of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, Tuliram Ronghang and the BJP.

The Town Committee elections in the district are important for the BJP as Lok Sabha election is approaching which will be a test for the party in urban areas.
