In a major feat, Darrang and Udalguri police in a joint operation apprehended the prime accused of Udalguri’s Kalaigaon incident, self-styled godman and tantrik Ramesh Sahariah on Monday night.

It has been alleged that at the advice of Ramesh Sahariah, the family of a science teacher, Jadab Sahariah, conducted some unusual rituals disrobing themselves in the temple at their residence.

Pulakesh Saharia, a bachelor of computer application, who was the only son of Jadab Sahariah, also went on a rampage and burnt the clothes the family members were wearing before they disrobed themselves, as revealed by Jadab Sahariah, who is undergoing treatment at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

Pulakesh also torched his newly-bought Royal Enfield Thunderbird motorcycle and their Wagon-R car.

Following reported attempt to sacrifice a three-year-old child of the sister of Jadab Sahariah as part of the rituals, police were called in.

As the police personnel were attacked by the unruly family members of Jadab Sahariah, the police opened fire at them in which Jadab Sahariah and Pulakesh Sahariah received bullet injuries.

Later Pulakesh Sahariah died of bullet injuries at GMCH.

Jadab Sahariah also revealed that tantrik Ramesh Sahariah is to be blamed for the whole incident.

According to reports, the tantric, wanted in connection with the Kalaigaon P.S vide case no. 48/19 under sections 120-B,417/420/294/353/354/506/307IPC lodged by one Ramesh Chandra Saikia, was taking shelter in his relative’s place at Kuruwa near Sipajhar in Darrang district.

But the police swooped on him on Monday night and he has been taken in the custody of Tangla police station in Udalguri.

Talking to media persons, Udalguri superintendent of police, Longnit Terang, informed that the priest is being interrogated and though many facts have surfaced nothing can be disclosed at this stage as it will be detrimental to the investigation into the case.

The neighbours of Jadab Sahariah’s family have claimed that the Sahariah family was in touch with the tantrikfor the last 11 years and it was under his instructions that the science teacher and other members of his family performed the rituals.

Ramesh Sahariah hails from Baneikuchi village of Darrang district.
