Guwahati: Amid the upcoming Assam assembly elections, a joint operation was carried out in Jorhat on Thursday evening.
The Jorhat Police, with assistance from the Railway Police, recovered two .32 calibre pistols along with live ammunition from two individuals identified as Maya Debnath and Tutun Debnath.
Officials confirmed that further legal proceedings have been initiated in connection with the seizure.
According to police sources, the operation was conducted based on specific intelligence inputs. Acting swiftly, the team intercepted the accused and carried out a search, leading to the recovery of the firearms and ammunition. The exact quantity of live rounds seized has not yet been officially disclosed.
A senior police officer stated that the recovery of illegal arms underscores ongoing efforts to curb the unlawful possession and circulation of firearms in the district.
โWe are verifying the source of the weapons and investigating whether the accused have links to any wider network,โ an official said.
The accused have been taken into custody for interrogation.
Authorities are examining whether the seized pistols were intended for criminal activities or supplied through illegal channels. Further legal action is continuing under relevant provisions of the Arms Act.
