GUWAHATI: In a significant breakthrough, police in Guwahati city of Assam busted a sophisticated honey trapping racket that involved blackmail and extortion of a government official.

The operation, which revealed a well-orchestrated cycle of blackmail, led to the detention of four women and two men.

The racket was exposed when a government official filed a complaint, detailing how he was ensnared through a honey trapping scheme.

The modus operandi involved women befriending the target and luring him to a house party.

During the party, a male accomplice, posing as a policeman, would demand money, threatening to release intimate and obscene photos taken during the gathering.

The blackmailers utilized alcohol-fuelled parties and compromising photos to coerce the official into paying substantial sums of money under the threat of making the photos public.

This method had reportedly been used to extort money from several individuals.

Acting on the complaint, Guwahati police in Assam detained six people: four women and two men.

The investigation is ongoing as authorities aim to apprehend more individuals involved in the racket.

Meanwhile, all six individuals arrested in connection with the case have been presented before the court of chief judicial magistrate in Kamrup-Metro district of Assam.
