Guwahati: Guwahati woke up to a greener initiative at the Assam Agricultural University’s Extension Education Institute (NE Region) on World Environment Day on Wednesday.

Held in collaboration with the Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF), the event aimed to raise awareness about environmental issues and promote sustainable practices in the region.

The day began with a ceremonial tree plantation drive at the EEI campus, symbolizing the importance of planting in environmental conservation. This initiative highlighted the theme of World Environment Day 2024, which focused on tackling climate change.

Dr. R. Bordoloi welcomed the participants and emphasized the historical significance of the day. He drew inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi’s quote, “Nature has enough to satisfy every man’s need, but not every man’s greed,” urging everyone to adopt sustainable practices.

The event’s keynote speaker, Dr. P. Bora, Director of Research at AAU, stressed the crucial role trees play in combating climate change, particularly in the context of Northeast India. He encouraged everyone to plant trees, highlighting their ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Dr. Arup J. Kalita, the State Coordinator for TOFI, CIFOR-ICRAF Assam, spoke about the Trees Outside Forest India Program and its importance. He emphasized the benefits of adopting agroforestry models for Assamese farmers, promoting a sustainable approach to agriculture.

The event also witnessed the launch of an innovative food product – “Micro-Greens” – by the “City Grower” group. This group comprises participants who completed an AAU’s Open and Distance Learning (ODL) program on rooftop gardening. These urban farmers, along with others who have embraced rooftop gardening in Guwahati, attended the event, showcasing their commitment to keeping the city green.

Faculty members, scientists, entrepreneurs, students, farmers, and other stakeholders actively participated in the discussions. Professors from AAU like Dr. C Deka, Dr. M Kalita, and Dr. U Kalita urged everyone to plant and nurture trees, raise awareness against deforestation, and contribute to conserving Earth’s biodiversity.

The event served as a platform to promote environmental consciousness and inspire action towards a greener future. By focusing on tree plantation, agroforestry practices, and innovative urban agriculture initiatives, the AAU’s celebration of World Environment Day offered a roadmap for a more sustainable Assam and the world.
