The 13th death anniversary of Leelakanta Deori, a prominent leader of Deori community of Assam was observed at Narayanpur in Lakhimpur district of Assam on Thursday.
A meeting was organized for that occasion at the public hall in Block Tiniali in Narayanpur by the Leelakanta Deori Memorial Trust in association with All Assam Deori Students Union (AADSU)’s state and Narayanpur units.
Observed as the Day of the Bhumiputra (son of the soil), the observation began by lighting the ceremonial lamp and garlanding on the statue of late Leelakanta Deori in the morning led by Manoj Prateem Deori Bharali, secretary of AADSU, Harris Deori, secretary of Lakhimpur AADSU and family members.
This was followed by plantation of saplings by Avinash Deori, president of Lakhimpur AADSU.
An open session was held in the afternoon which was chaired by Achi Mohan Deori, secretary of Leelakanta Deori Memorial Trust.
The president of Deori Autonomous Cpuncil (DAC) Bishnu Kumar Deori attended the meeting as guest of honour. Bihpuria MLA Devananda Hazarika attended the meeting as the chief guest.
Noted social worker Puni Ram Deori was presented the Bhumiputra-Adhikar Award-2019 in that meeting. It may be recalled that Leelakanta Deori, a bank official and a prominent Deori leader was kidnapped and murdered on January 6, 2006 in Narayanpur. He has been declared a martyr by AADSU for his cause for the community.
