A full-grown female giraffe in Assam state zoo in Guwahati has died due to ‘accidental’ suffocation late on Thursday night.

Authorities of the Assam state zoo-cum-botanical garden in Guwahati have informed that the preliminary inquiry suggests that the giraffe had an “accidental death”.

Although the actual cause of the giraffe’s death is yet to be ascertained, it is suspected that the giraffe’s neck got stuck in a railing of the feeding platform leading to suffocation.

The dead giraffe has been identified as Rongili, who was brought from Patna in Bihar in 2020.

Rongili and Kulananda were brought to the Zoo in Guwahati from Patna under an animal exchange programme.
