Guwahati: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president and Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi on Friday morning alleged that the charge sheet filed in connection with the death-related case involving popular singer Zubeen Garg was not intended to deliver justice, but was instead aimed at tarnishing the artist’s public image.
He directly accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of attempting to malign Garg’s reputation in the eyes of the people.
Raising the issue through a strong political statement on his social media account, Gogoi claimed that the state government’s actions were politically motivated and part of a deliberate attempt to undermine the legacy of one of Assam’s most celebrated cultural icons. He alleged that the chief minister’s “real objective” was to portray Zubeen Garg in a negative light before the public.
“The charge sheet filed in the name of Zubeen Garg’s death is not meant to ensure justice. It is meant only for his character assassination,” Gogoi said.
“The chief minister’s primary intention is to lower Zubeen Garg in the eyes of the people of Assam.”
Escalating his allegations, the APCC chief warned that the government could go to “any extent” to achieve this objective. He further claimed that pressure tactics might even be used against Garg’s family members and supporters.
“To succeed in this objective, the chief minister can stoop to any level. If required, he will not hesitate to blackmail Zubeen da’s family and supporters,” Gogoi alleged.
Calling Zubeen Garg an irreplaceable cultural symbol of the state, Gogoi asserted that the people of Assam would not tolerate any attempt to damage the singer’s legacy. He described Garg as a figure synonymous with Assamese pride and identity.
“Zubeen Garg is Assam’s Kanchenjunga. We will never allow Himanta Biswa Sarma to harm Zubeen da’s heritage and good name,” he said.
The ruling BJP, however, has not officially responded to Gogoi’s allegations so far. Political observers noted that the controversy has added a fresh layer of tension to Assam’s already charged political atmosphere, with culture, celebrity, and governance intersecting in a sensitive debate.
The issue is expected to trigger further political reactions in the coming days, as both the opposition and the government face mounting public scrutiny over the handling of the matter.
Legendary singer Zubeen Garg died in Singapore on September 19, 2025, while swimming in the sea under unclear circumstances. He was 52 years old.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Guwahati branch of the CID recently filed a charge sheet in connection with his death case.
