According to information, the victims – Vincent and Shizu of Kohima – were contacted by one Jaliluddin of Chapori Gaon in North Lakhimpur and Ramesh Tanti of No 5 Line of Dejoo Tea Estate to open a branch of an insurance company.
Sources said, “The Nagaland youths paid Rs 55,000 as advance to Jaliluddin and Ramesh Tanti to set up the branch.”
“Later, Jaliluddin and Ramesh Tanti asked Vincent and Shizu to deposit Rs 4.5 lakh in the account of one Zakir Hussain of Bongalmora in Lakhimpur district and assured of finalisation of the project,” added sources.
Accordingly, the Nagaland youths deposited the amount before meeting the fraudsters in North Lakhimpur.
Vincent and Shizu also paid another Rs 4 lakh to the fraudsters in North Lakhimpur on December 3. After that Jaliluddin and Ramesh Tanti disappeared and sensing trouble, the Nagaland youths contacted North East Students’ Organization (NESO) leaders back home.
The NESO leaders contacted the North Lakhimpur unit of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) regarding the incident and with their help, the Nagaland youths had filed an FIR at Silaneebari Police Outpost in Lakhimpur against Ramesh Tanti.
A team of police on Friday night was able to arrest Ramesh Tanti. However, Jaliluddin managed to escape, sources further informed.
