Guwahati: Jorhat Police have arrested Ankit Das, one of the key accused in the case involving the mysterious death of a young woman, taking the total number of arrests to four.
Das, a resident of Macharhat in Jorhat, was arrested from Milan Nagar on Thursday, August 20, by a team from Jorhat Sadar Police Station. Investigators are questioning him to determine his alleged involvement in the case. He was reportedly absconding after the woman’s death.
Police had earlier arrested three other people in connection with the incident. Two young women were taken into custody on Tuesday, followed by the arrest of alleged prime accused Aryan Goswami.
The two women, while speaking to reporters on Wednesday, allegedly claimed that Das had supplied drugs to the deceased. Investigators are examining the allegation as part of the ongoing probe.
A court on Wednesday sent Goswami and the two women to three days of police custody.
The investigation is focused on a flat at Gauri Enclave in Dahabara Chuk, Jorhat, where the incident is believed to have taken place. The B-2 flat is owned by Aryan’s mother, Jharna Goswami.
According to details emerging during the investigation, an alleged drug-related gathering was held at the flat on Independence Day. The premises were reportedly used for parties when Aryan’s mother was away.
The deceased woman was allegedly present at the gathering. Police are investigating what happened at the flat and the circumstances that preceded her death.
Police have also questioned Jharna Goswami and Khushi Das in connection with the case. Both were reportedly allowed to leave after questioning and being served notices.
Following his arrest, Aryan Goswami told the media that the woman had allegedly died after consuming an excessive amount of drugs. He further claimed that those present attempted to save her, including by administering salt.
These claims have not been independently verified and are being assessed by investigators.
The other two accused have reportedly denied having knowledge of the drugs allegedly possessed by the deceased.
With Das now in custody, police have stepped up questioning of the accused as they work to establish the events leading to the woman’s death and determine the precise role, if any, of those arrested.
