Former All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi and Patacharkuch MLA Pabindra Deka joined the newly-floated political party, Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) on Wednesday during the party’s convention in Sivasagar.
The former students’ leader was given a rousing welcome as he reached the convention venue, Natya Mandir.
MLA Pabin Deka resigned from Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on Tuesday.
While speaking at the convention after joining the AJP, former AASU leader Gogoi said he has joined the new party, which has been formed with support from the AASU and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Parishad (AJYCP), to give a tough fight against the trend of cheating and betrayal.
He said the people of Assam now want a change in the real change to prevent the aggression of the national forces and those parties which have joined hands with such forces.
He said, “It is time to revive the base of regionalism.”
Gogoi said he would never betray the people of Assam but will maintain his “uncompromising” nature and work for the best interests of the people of the state.
The two-day convention of the Asom Jatiya Parish (AJP) will continue till December 17.
While talking to reporters on December 14, Gogoi said he had decided to join the new political party after understanding the feelings and emotions of the people across Assam.
“The people of Assam want the rise of the power of regionalism. Therefore, I have decided to join Asom Jatiya Parishad as its ideology has similarities with that of AASU,” Gogoi had said.
He further said that the camp of regionalism would form government at Dispur in 2021.
