Doomdooma: The death of 27-year-old GNM nurse Shyamolima Bora at a tea estate bungalow in Assam’s Doomdooma has taken a new turn after her father, Premkanta Bora, alleged that his daughter was murdered in a “totally pre-planned” act and demanded a high-level inquiry into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Speaking to Northeast Now over the phone from Nagaon on Friday evening, Bora said he did not believe that his daughter could have taken her own life. He alleged that there were injuries and other circumstances surrounding her death that raised serious doubts about the version of suicide.
“My daughter can never commit suicide. I suspect a totally pre-planned murder,” Bora said.
According to the father, blood was allegedly seen coming from his daughter’s ears and there were scratch marks on her neck and nose. He further claimed that during the cremation, her abdomen reportedly burst and a petrol-like substance emerged.
These claims could not be independently verified, and the circumstances are part of the ongoing police investigation.
Bora described Shyamolima as the eldest child of the family and said she was deeply caring towards her parents. He said the family depended partly on her support and appealed to the government and administration to ensure justice and provide financial assistance to the bereaved family.
The development followed an FIR lodged by Bora at Baghjan Police Station. Police registered a case bearing No. 18/26 under Sections 103(1) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Co-district Superintendent of Police Diganta Dutta confirmed to Northeast Now that Shyamolima’s husband, Gagandeep Singh Dhillon, had been arrested.
The death occurred at the couple’s bungalow at Doimukhia (Roseberry) Tea Estate under the Baghjan Police Station area. The couple returned to the bungalow at around 10 pm after going out for food Wednesday evening.
The bungalow’s night guards reportedly heard Shyamolima crying and later, after hearing Dhillon shouting, entered the house and found her severely burnt on the floor near a bed.
The guards reportedly alerted the tea estate authorities and workers after discovering the woman.
Shyamolima, who worked as a GNM nurse at a private nursing home in Doomdooma, had attended duty on Wednesday before returning to the tea estate.
She had reportedly been married in court to Dhillon, a native of Khuti Kota in Nagaon district, for around one-and-a-half years, and the couple had been residing at the tea estate for about a year.
The bungalow’s gate chowkidars, Pradip Bhumij and Deepak Kondo, said the couple had occasionally quarrelled, although they would later reconcile. They also reportedly entered the bungalow after the incident and found Shyamolima lying there.
Dhillon’s parents, who live in Nagaon and were not present at the bungalow at the time of the incident, said they were away when the incident occurred.
Police have not drawn any final conclusion regarding the cause and circumstances of Shyamolima’s death.
The arrest of her husband and the FIR alleging murder have added another dimension to the investigation, with the deceased’s family now demanding a thorough and impartial probe.
