Doomdooma: The Doomdooma regional committee of Bir Lachit Sena on Friday submitted a memorandum to the Doomdooma Forest Division in Assam’s Tinsukia district, demanding an immediate halt to alleged illegal sand mining, timber smuggling and unauthorised earth excavation across the Doomdooma Co district area.
The organisation alleged that indiscriminate extraction of river sand was causing serious damage to the natural environment and demanded an immediate crackdown on the illegal mining of the region’s valuable riverine sand.
“The illegal extraction of river sand by destroying nature must be stopped immediately, while timber transportation without valid challans must also be brought to an end,” said regional committee chief secretary Suruj Das and Tinsukia district vice-president Abhishek Bora.
The memorandum also called for effective protection of forests in reserved areas to safeguard wildlife and maintain ecological balance.
The organisation further demanded that unauthorised earth excavation using JCBs, bulldozers and dumpers be stopped to protect agricultural land and wetlands.
“The authorities must conduct regular patrolling and enforcement drives against those violating forest laws, environmental protection laws and mining regulations. We have made it clear that effective action must be initiated on the memorandum within seven days,” the two leaders said.
The Bir Lachit Sena leaders urged the forest authorities to take stringent measures against activities allegedly threatening the region’s natural resources and ecological security.
They warned that continued illegal extraction and forest-related activities could have wider environmental consequences.
