Assam Minister for Tourism, Welfare of Plain Tribes & Backward Classes (WPTBC) Chandan Brahma on Saturday inaugurated the Dr BR Ambedkar Bhawan at Golaghat.
Inaugurating the Dr BR Ambedkar Bhawan, Welfare of Plain Tribes & Backward Classes Minister Brahma said the building would serve as a guest house and community hall for various social functions. While preference will be given to members of the Scheduled Caste community, it can also be used by others also.
The building has been constructed at a cost of Rs 91,14,500 on 2 kathas of land donated by the Anusuchita Jati Parishad (ANJP), an association of the Scheduled Caste community.
The Deputy Commissioner of Golaghata district Gaurav Bothra and the district Superintendent of Police, Manabendra Dev Ray, besides the Director of the Directorate of the Welfare of Scheduled Caste, Leena Das, Additional Deputy Commissioner Utpal Doley, Sub-Divisional Officer (Sadar) Manojyoti Kutum, departmental officials and other staff members were also present at the meeting organized on the occasion.
The Dr BR Ambedkar Bhawan is located near the Circuit House of Golaghat.
It may be mentioned that Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, popularly known as Babasaheb, was an Indian jurist, economist, politician and social reformer who inspired the Dalit Buddhist movement and campaigned against social discrimination towards untouchables (Dalits). He also supported the rights of women and labour.
Dr Ambedkar was Independent India’s first law minister and the principal architect of the Constitution of India and a founding father of the Republic of India.
