The Dhubri District Mahila Congress Committee staged protest against the soaring price of onion wearing garlands on Thursday in front of the office of the Dhubri deputy commissioner.

The Congress workers with placards on their hands shouted slogans against the Narendra Modi-led NDA government in the Centre and the Sarbananda Sonowal-led government in state.

The Congress workers lamented the fact that prices of other vegetables including ginger, garlic and potato as well as other essential food commodities have also increased since the last couple of months due to short supply of the products.

Baby Begum, the president of Dhubri District Mahila Congress Committee said, “Onion and other vegetables have become precious commodities with prices ranging from Rs 100 to Rs 120 per kilogram.”

“We are protesting by wearing these garlands of onions and other vegetables because we fear that they may vanish from the market very soon,” Begum added.

The price of onion has gone up in and around Dhubri for the last couple of months.

People earlier bought onion at Rs 70 per kilogram in November, but currently, fresh onions are being sold at Rs 110 per kg in the markets here.

The price of matured onion is Rs 120 per kg in Dhubri’s local market.

Holding banners and shouting slogans, the Congress workers demanded that the government should reduce the price and “stop harassing” the poor.
