Sivasagar MLA and president of Raijor Dal – Akhil Gogoi – on Monday, led a massive protest against the new Assam Cow Protection Act in Dhemaji.
People in hundreds took part in the protest demanding Assam government to repeal the Act.
The protestors, chanting slogans against the Act, said that it (the Act) will endanger income source for many farmers in the state.
Meanwhile, Akhil Gogoi has said that his party – Raijor Dal, will launch a state-wide agitation if the Assam government fails to repeal the Cow Protection Act.
“This new Cow Protection Act in Assam will result in massive losses for the farmers of the state. On many occasions, farmers sell their cows to bear the study expenses of their children,” Akhil Gogoi said.
The Sivasagar MLA said that the ruling BJP in Assam brought the Act “just to please the RSS”.
“Cow Protection Act is a conspiracy to harass the poor,” the Sivasagar MLA added.
“I would like to inform the Assam chief minister that if the Act is not repealed at the earliest, Raijor Dal will organise a protest rally in Dispur with cows by our side,” Akhil Gogoi said.
The Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021 aims at regulating slaughter, consumption and transportation of cattle in the state.
The Act prohibits sale, offer or exposure of beef in areas, which are predominantly inhabited by Hindu, Jain, Sikh and other non-beef eating communities.
The prohibition is also effected within a radius of 5 km of any temple, xatra or other Hindu religious institutions.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been claiming that the Cattle Act would help in restoring religious harmony in the state.
