Singchung: A recent camera trap deployment in Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary (EWS) in Arunachal Pradesh’s West Kameng district has captured exciting footage of a red panda. The Wildlife Institute of India, in collaboration with EWS, installed the camera trap in March 2024.
“This is a significant sighting of a highly endangered species. The red panda’s presence confirms that EWS provides an ideal habitat for these creatures,” said Yachang Kani, Range Forest Officer (RFO).
This isn’t the first red panda sighting in EWS, but it highlights the ongoing need for conservation efforts.
The red panda, also known as the ‘firefox’ for its vibrant fur, faces dwindling populations with less than 10,000 individuals globally.
EWS serves as a crucial sanctuary for the red panda and other endangered species. The sanctuary’s diverse and lush forests create a perfect environment for these animals to flourish.
“This discovery strengthens our commitment to conservation. We are inspired to continue working tirelessly to protect these magnificent animals and their homes,” said RFO Kani.
