The Assam Congress on Sunday came out all guns blazing, slamming Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary over his statement on price rise.

Biswajit Daimary on Saturday had said that there is a price rise in fuel, “because the Government needs revenue”.

Reacting to this statement by Speaker Biswajit Daimary, the Assam Congress said that the Government has “no policy to control price rise”.

Assam Congress said: “To say that Government cannot control price rise, as they need revenue, is to say that the BJP Government has no policy with regard to controlling price rise.”

It added: “Yes, a government needs revenue, but who is Government for? Isn’t it for the people of the country? So, if people of the country cannot be given a controlled price of petrol diesel and essential commodities, which they can afford, especially in the hard pandemic times, then they (BJP) have no business to run government at the expense of tax payers’ money.”

“Government money is tax payers’ money. It is not their personal money. So, if they do not know how to run Government, the BJP should resign,” the Assam Congress further said.

“…when Congress left office, the average crude oil rates were 105.52 dollars per barrel. But the petrol prices were kept at Rs 71.51 per litre.  Current international crude oil price is 44.82 dollars (per barrel) in 2020-2021. So, why the rates of petrol and diesel high?” the Assam Congress questioned.

In a bizarre statement, Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary had said that prices of essential commodities are rising because “people nowadays do not produce food items at their homes”.
