Guwahati: In protest against alleged voter list manipulation, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) staged a demonstration today at the office of the BokoโChaygaon Sub-Divisional Commissioner. The protest targeted BJP workers who reportedly entered the office at night and interfered with the deletion and inclusion of names in the votersโ list. Over a hundred Congress workers participated.
The programme was organised under the initiative of the Kamrup District Congress Committee, with support from the Boko and Bongaon Block Congress Committees. Present at the protest were Kamrup District Congress President Pranjit Choudhury, senior leaders R. P. Sharma and Ramanna Baruah, and MLAs Nandita Das and Rakibuddin Ahmed.
Addressing the protesters, MLA Rakibuddin Ahmed criticised remarks made by the Chief Minister in recent public meetings, alleging that he repeatedly stated that โMiyas should be punished.โ Ahmed claimed the Chief Minister had reportedly instructed BJP workers to reduce rickshaw fares for Miya workers and to delete the voting rights of four to five lakh Miyas whenever possible, while harassing them when opportunities arose.
Ahmed termed such statements โcompletely unbecomingโ of a Chief Minister and emphasised that those living in Assam for generations are deeply connected to the land, culture, and unity of the state. He said Assam โ โBor Asomโ belongs to the heritage of Srimanta Sankardeva, Madhavdeva, Maa Kamakhya, and Hazrat Pir Ajan Fakir. He accused the BJP of creating divisions and warned that repeated calls to harass a community and manipulate votes were โreprehensible and dangerous for democracy.โ
Following the protest, Congress leaders and workers submitted a memorandum to the election authorities, urging strict action to investigate the alleged irregularities and ensure the integrity of the votersโ list.
