Digboi: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday launched a sharp political attack on the Gandhi family in Digboi. He accused them of long-standing neglect and cultural insensitivity towards the North East.
At the same time, he highlighted the BJP governmentโs welfare-driven governance and election readiness.
Addressing a public meeting and later speaking to the media at Tingrai Stadium in Tinsukia district, Sarma criticised the alleged refusal to accept a traditional gamosa at the Presidentโs Republic Day โAt Homeโ reception. He described the incident as an affront to the cultural identity of the region.
โThe gamosa is not just a ceremonial cloth. It symbolises honour and heritage. Any insult to it is an insult to the people of the North East,โ the Chief Minister said. He claimed such incidents expose the Congress leadershipโs attitude towards the region. Sarma also warned that unless Rahul Gandhi respects the culture and sentiments of the North East, he should not expect political support from the region.
Meanwhile, women-centric welfare initiatives took centre stage at the event. Sarma underlined the BJP governmentโs focus on women-led development while distributing cheques under the Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan (MMUA). He said the government has identified 32 lakh women beneficiaries across Assam, of whom nearly eight lakh have already received financial assistance.
Digboi marked the 93rd phase of the scheme. More than 17,000 women beneficiaries received support on Thursday. Sarma also said nearly 1,000 women from the constituency have benefited under the Lakhpati Baideo scheme, which aims to create sustainable livelihoods.
The Chief Minister also highlighted development works in Digboi. He credited local BJP MLA Suren Phukanโs tenure for improvements across multiple sectors. According to Sarma, focused governance and effective implementation of schemes have accelerated development in the constituency.
Reiterating the partyโs welfare commitments ahead of the Assembly elections, Sarma announced that free Public Distribution System (PDS) commodities would continue for eligible beneficiaries if the BJP returns to power.
Responding to questions on the BJPโs candidate for Digboi, Sarma dismissed speculation of internal confusion. He said the party will distribute tickets strictly on performance. Public acceptance and organisational strength, he added, will be the key criteria.
โOnly leaders who deliver and enjoy the confidence of the people will be fielded,โ Sarma said, signalling the partyโs strategy ahead of the electoral contest.
