Several organisations on Friday staged protests at Pathsala against Congress MLA from Assam’s Baghbor Assembly constituency, Sherman Ali, for his “provocative and communal” comment.
MLA Sherman Ali on September 29 made provocative communal remarks in the media.
Bajali district committee of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) burnt the effigy of the MLA and shouted slogans demanding proper and prompt punishment to the MLA for his comment.
The Bajali Sub-divisional unit of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) filed an FIR against the MLA at the Pathsala police outpost.
Meanwhile, the brother of the first martyr of Assam agitation, Chandra Kanta Talukdar, demanded the arrest of the MLA immediately.
Earlier on the day, Assam Congress served a show-cause notice to party MLA Sherman Ali for making communal remarks and “acting as an agent of the BJP”.
“Allegations are rife within party and even outside that you are acting as an agent of the BJP while being a part of the Congress party,” the show-cause notice read.
“…due to your closeness to CM Himanta Biswa Sarma you are being sponsored to make such comments to cause damage to the Congress specially during election time,” the show-cause notice added.
Assam Congress chief Bhupen Borah also sought ‘explanation’ from Sherman Ali for making “communally provocative statements”.
