Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, reacting to Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed’s proposal to construct a ‘Miya Museum’ at Sankardeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati, said that “there is no separate identity-and culture in Char Anchal of Assam.”

“In my understanding, there is no separate identity-and culture in Char Anchal of Assam as most of the people had migrated from Bangladesh,” Sarma tweeted.

“Obviously, in Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakhetra, which is the epitome of Assamese culture, we will not allow any distortion. Sorry MLA Sahab,” the tweet added.

 

It may be mentioned here that the Baghbar MLA had proposed the Assam government to set-up a Miya Museum at Sankardeva Kalakshetra to highlight the culture and heritage of the Miya community- who most resides in the char-chapori (sandbar) areas of the state.
