GUWAHATI: The Assam unit of the Congress party has finalised candidates in as many as five constituencies in the state for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
This was confirmed by Assam Congress president Bhupen Borah.

It may be mentioned here that there are a total of 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in the Northeast state of Assam.
While the Congress has finalised candidates in five of the 14 seats, it is expected to leave few of the remaining nine seats for the parties in the United Opposition Forum Assam (UOFA).

“We received over 70 applications for the 14 constituencies. Our screening committee has identified one candidate for each of the five constituencies,” said Assam Congress chief Bhupen Borah.
He added: “The remaining nine have two contenders each. Some of these may be allocated to our UOFA partners.”
The Assam Congress president further said that a final decision in regards to candidates in the remaining nine constituencies in the state would be taken by February 20.
Earlier, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), one of the UOFA constituents, announced candidates for three Lok Sabha constituencies — Dibrugarh, Guwahati and Sonitpur.
