Guwahati: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee(APCC) on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, filed a police complaint against the ruling BJP for circulating a controversial video of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on social media.
Congress MLAs Sibamoni Bora and Diganta Barman lodged the complaint at Dispur Police Station in Guwahati.
The Assam BJP had posted the video on its official social media handle on February 7. The clip showed Sarma allegedly aiming a rifle and firing at two figures. One wore a skull cap, while the other had a beard. The post carried the caption “point-blank shot”.
However, the BJP later deleted the video following widespread political backlash.
Earlier, on February 9, Sarma said he was unaware of the video. Meanwhile, Congress president Gaurav Gogoi accused the Chief Minister of “inciting genocide” against Muslims through such content. He also urged the police to take suo motu cognisance of the matter.
In its complaint, the Congress said the video symbolically showed Sarma firing at Muslims at point-blank range. The party further alleged that the overlaid text included phrases such as “foreigner-free Assam” and “there is no forgiveness to Bangladeshis”.
According to the Opposition, these phrases targeted Bengal-origin Muslims in the state. The party said such communities are often derogatorily labelled as “Miyas” or “Bangladeshis”.
“The content targets a particular community. It is highly provocative and communal,” the Congress MLAs said. They warned that such material could lead to social disharmony.
Meanwhile, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on February 9 filed a separate complaint with the Hyderabad Police. He sought criminal action against the Assam Chief Minister over the now-deleted video.
Reacting to the complaint, Sarma said he had no knowledge of the clip. He added that he was ready to face any legal action. “If any case has been filed against me, arrest me. I have no objection. I am prepared to go to jail,” he said. However, he reiterated his stance against what he described as Bangladeshi infiltrators.
The controversy has further intensified political tensions in Assam, with Opposition parties demanding strict action over the video.
