Political parties in Assam have welcomed the dates for Lok Sabha elections in Assam. The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Sunday announced the dates for all the states and union territories in the country.

Assam will have a three phased elections this time—while five constituency of the state will go to polls on the first phase on April 11, another five constituencies will go to polls on the second phase on April 18 and the rest four constituencies will go to polls during the third phase in April 23.

“We are happy about the dates of the polls for Assam. The ECI is an independent body and they have taken the decision to hold the elections on the dates. We are ready for the polls will contest the elections,” said senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia on Sunday.

The ruling BJP also welcomed the decision of the Election commission and said that the BJP will get majority of the seats in Assam.

“There is no alternative to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the country at present. The developmental works done by the government in the past five years have won the hearts of the people and I am sure that the party will win majority of the seats in the country this time as well,” said senior BJP leader and chairman of Assam Petrochemicals Limited (APL) Jagadish Bhuyan.

Out of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam, the BJP has seven MPs in the outgoing Lok Sabha followed by three members each of the Congress and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and one Independent MP.
