Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday visited erosion hit Mirigaon Tengabari under Chabua LAC in eastern Assam’s Dibrugarh district.

Sonowal took stock of erosion protection works being implemented by the State Water Resources Department.

The officials of Water Resources department informed the chief minister that a scheme for installation of porcupines under SOPD scheme of the State Government amounting to Rs three crore is presently being implemented in the area.

They informed that already 60 per cent work against the scheme has been completed.

They also informed that a proposal under SDRF with a project cost of Rs five crore has been submitted to protect the nearby Rongmola area from erosion.

The chief minister after reviewing the porcupine work asked the officials of Water Resources department to expeditiously complete the scheme.

Moreover, in view of requirement of additional funds to carry out the scheme, he directed the Water Resources officials to submit another proposal for the project.

Noteworthy that Dibru and Brahmaputra rivers along with Ananta Nala have been causing large scale erosion in Mirigaon Tengabari and its adjoining areas.

Further, these rivers have also led to erosion in areas starting from Soikhowaghat in Sadia to Maijanghat at Rahmoria.

The State Government in coordination with the Central Government has taken up steps to tackle river bank erosion in the State.

Moreover, the Central Government has also constituted North East Water Management Authority under the chairmanship of the vice chairman of NITI Aayog to study the flood and erosion problem in Assam and the Northeast and to suggest pragmatic measures for its permanent solution.

On the other hand, Sonowal also visited the residence of local beneficiaries of government flagship schemes at the area and interacted with them to get a first-hand information about the implementation of the schemes.

Chabua MLA Binod Hazarika, Lahowal MLA Rituparna Baruah, DC i/c of Dibrugarh Sanjoy Dutta, officials of Water Resources Department and district administration were also present at the time of visit of the chief minister.
