Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal called on Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Monday.

During the meeting, Sonowal had discussions on law and order issues and the steps to be taken in the run up to the publication of final National Register of Citizens (NRC) on August 31, 2019.

This is the second meeting in less than a week between Assam CM Sonowal and Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the issue of publication of NRC in Assam.

On Monday, the Union Home Minister assured all help for the State to maintain law and order before, during and after the final publication of the NRC.

Sonowal elaborated on the security apparatus put in place in Assam in the event of any law and order situation.

He also informed the Union Home Minister that the people of Barak-Brahmaputra, hills and plains extended all cooperation to the state government during the ongoing NRC update process.

“Home Minister has assured us of providing full support,” said Sonowal after meeting Shah at North Block.

It is learnt Sonowal briefed Shah about the ground situation related to NRC publication in Assam.

Sonowal said people may raise objections after final publications of NRC “and we will act accordingly.”

He said, “During the draft NRC publication too, a section of people had raised objections and issues, but people of Assam have supported us.”

“We expect the same support while publication of the final NRC,” said Sonowal.

The Chief Minister said he has also discussed the post-flood situation in the State.

“I have also told him about the post-flood situation in the state though the central government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah has helped a lot,” said Sonowal.

The NRC update process is being carried out in the state under the supervision of the Supreme Court of India.

Sonowal also said that during the first and final draft publication of the NRC, people of the state showed immense maturity and this time the government expects similar response.

Earlier, Sonowal had met Shah at his office in North Block on August 13 and briefed him about the government’s preparation for publication of NRC on August 13.

Sonowal had also briefed Shah about the damage caused by recent wave of floods in Assam.
