Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Sunday, expressed hope that the Union Budget for 2026–27 would allot Assam a higher portion of tax revenue compared to the previous year.
Speaking to the media ahead of the budget presentation, Sarma said that states carefully observe the annual revenue distribution from the Centre. “We always check how much revenue was shared with us last year and compare it with the current allocation. I am optimistic that Assam will receive a larger share this time,” he remarked.
The Chief Minister also noted that the approach of Union Budget announcements for states has evolved over time. In the past, budget highlights often focused on specific projects, like the introduction of a Rajdhani Express train. “Earlier, each budget would mention a single train or project for a state. Today, these announcements have become routine. States are now more interested in overall fiscal transfers than individual projects,” he said.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman started presenting the Union Budget in the Lok Sabha on Sunday at 11 am, marking her ninth consecutive budget presentation.
During the session, she also tabled the 16th Finance Commission report, which outlines how central tax revenues will be allocated between the Centre and the states for 2026–31.
