Guwahati: A day after the Election Commission published the final electoral rolls for Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said a large number of D-voters (doubtful voters) had been removed during the Special Revision exercise.
Speaking at a press conference in Dispur on Wednesday, Sarma said the deletions followed complaints submitted by BJP workers. He claimed the revision was conducted โdespite threats and intimidationโ.
โThis is only the beginning. More such names will be deleted once the Special Intensive Revision is carried out,โ he said.
The Chief Minister reiterated that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), which he had earlier sought to initiate before the Assembly elections, would be undertaken at a later stage.
He said the proposed exercise would be โvery extensive and properly doneโ. According to Sarma, the Election Commission had previously declined to begin the SIR, citing the non-publication of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
In earlier remarks, Sarma had suggested that a SIR could lead to the removal of four to five lakh voters he described as โsuspected individualsโ.
Launching a fresh attack on alleged illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, the Chief Minister said, โThe campaign against illegal Bangladeshi Muslim immigrants will continue.โ He, however, asserted that Assamese voters would not be affected and urged the public not to be apprehensive about the roll revision.
On Tuesday, the Election Commission released Assamโs final electoral rolls, recording a net deletion of more than 2.43 lakh names from the draft list. Chief Electoral Officer Anurag Goel said the final rolls include 2.49 crore voters, marking a 0.97% decline from the draft rolls published on December 27, 2025, which had listed 2.52 crore electors.
