Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday assured to turn the Mising Youth Festival venue in Majuli into an ethno-cultural village.

Sonowal made the assurance while attending 7th Mising Youth Festival at Jengraimukh in Majuli.

The 7th Mising Youth Festival, which started on March 5, came to an end on Sunday.

Addressing a large gathering at the closing function of the festival, chief minister Sonowal said, “The festival is a glaring example of the colourful cultural heritage of the Mising community.”

Sonowal said in the 21st century when information technology calling the shots of every activities of the modern life, Mising Youth Festival has shown the people’s inherent ties with their culture.

He also said witnessing the spontaneous participation and overwhelming success of the festival.

Sonowal assured that the venue of the festival Simorguri at Jengraimukh would be turned into an ethno-cultural village.

Chief minister Sonowal also said the Mising community is known worldwide for its diligence as he called upon the people belonging to the community to work hard and help the state to sustain its forward march.

Paying rich tributes to the legends of the community like late Taburam Taid, Kamala Miri, Tarun Chandra Pamegam and Indira Miri, Sonowal urged the youths of the community to follow their footsteps and work for progress of the community as well as the state.

Referring to the state government’s commitment to the development and enrichment of the literature, culture and language of the ethnic groups of the state, Sonowal said under Bhasa Gaurav achoni steps have been taken to grant financial help to all indigenous communities.

He also called upon the youths to work hard and not to fall prey to drugs and other narcotic substances and tread the path of success.

Cultural affairs minister Naba Kumar Doley and MP Pradan Baruah also spoke on the occasion.

MLAs Bhuban Pegu, Ranoj Pegu, Debananda Hazarika, chief executive members (CEM) of Mising Autonomous Council Paramananda Chayengia and Deuri Autonomous Council CEM Madhab Deuri were also present.
