The citizens of Assam’s Dibrugarh district have expressed unhappiness over the sudden transfer of Dibrugarh superintendent of police (SP) Subashini Sankaran days after the Muharram vandalism incident.
Sankaran has been transferred to 10 APBn in Guwahati.
Known to be an honest and upright IPS officer, Sankaran had become quite popular among the public of Dibrugarh.
In fact, during her short tenure of eight months, she had led a relentless war against the drugs and timber mafia and successfully carried a major crackdown on cattle smugglers in the district.
The Home department of the State through a notification transferred and posted Sankaran as the commandant of 10th Assam Police Battalion (APBn), Kahilipara.
Through the same order, Gautam Borah, commandant of the 10th Assam Battalion was transferred and posted as the new SP of Dibrugarh district.
Borah had earlier served as the SP of Dibrugarh.
After the news spread, people took to the social media and expressed their unhappiness over the government order to transfer her.
In a Facebook post, one FB user said: “Extremely disappointed, a hard working Lady officer is transferred just to appease and satisfy the Eco system of all illegal activities”
“Now Happy days are back for all illegal activities in Dibrugarh.”
Another FB user on his account stated: “Is this justice done to SP mam hard and bravery wrks done by her n what result finally transfer orders. Hell to govt. Really disappointed.”
Echoing the same, another facebook user stated: “She was honest, efficient and well deserving SP in Dibrugarh.”
According to sources, Sankaran has taken bold steps against drug trade and cattle smuggling in Dibrugarh after joining in service.
“Some of the organisations were not happy with her functioning because she stopped their illegal earning. Recently, many drug smugglers and cattle thieves were arrested while transporting cattle to other district,” said sources.
Dibrugarh police on Thursday arrested two persons in connection with vandalism during a Muharram procession in the town on Tuesday.
The arrested persons were identified as Fulkan Hussain(24), a resident of Mirzabaug and Javed Akhtar Khan alias Azad Khan(57) of Panchali area.
After the arrest of Khan, his supporters had gheraoed Dibrugarh Police Station demanding his release.
Mazid Khan, another accused in the case is absconding. Later, both of them were granted bail by the court.
They were booked under sections 120/B(Criminal conspiracy), Section 34 (Criminal acts done by several person in furtherance of common intentions), Section 427 (Mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty thousand rupees and above) Section 431 (Mischief by injury to public road etc) of the IPC.
On Tuesday, while the Tazia procession was passing through the RKB Road and HS Road area of Dibrugarh town, a section of the crowd went on the rampage and damaged several private vehicles parked on the roadside.
The clips of the incident later went viral on the social media. A case was registered at Dibrugarh Police Station following the incidents of vandalism.
Sources said, “A section of people, organisations and politicians were unhappy with her functioning because they are not getting the monthly bribes from the drug traders and the cattle smugglers.”
