The district administration has drawn up a slew of security measures for ensuring peaceful and smooth observance of Muharram on September 21.
Chairing a high level law and order meeting at his office conference hall here on Friday, Deputy Commissioner Adil Khan deliberated on preventive, precautionary and protective measures during the observance of Muharram in Hailakandi town, Lala, Katlicherra and other parts of the district.

Khan urged the Muslim clerics, members of the Hailakandi and Lala Muharram Committees, representatives of political parties and leading citizens to cooperate with the law-enforcement agencies for maintaining peace during Muharram and help in promoting communal harmony and brotherhood. “Precautionary measures shall be taken during Muharram and law and order will be maintained along routes of processions,” Khan said.
The Deputy Commissioner assured that all the suggestions put forth will be taken into account before finalization of the action plan.
Processions will pass through the fixed routes with regulations of traffic flow and timings of processions will be observed strictly.

Superintendent of Police Mohneesh Mishra briefed the participants about the security arrangements to ensure peaceful observance of Muharram. He asked the participants to contact control room numbers 9435992755 and 7575908149 for any help or assistance.
The meeting decided to extend the time of observance till 5 pm due to Friday prayers.
MLA Katlicherra Suzamuddin Laskar, District Development Commissioner, FR Laskar, Additional Deputy Commissioners, Amalendu Roy, Ruth Lienthang and EL Fairhiem, Circle Officers Tridip Roy and James Aind, Assistant Commissioners Rebecca L Changsan and Parikshit Phukan, SDO (Sadar) Prodip Timung, prominent citizens and officials of Public Health Engineering, District Information and Public Relations, Health, PWD and other departments were present in the meeting.
Muslims regard Muharram as the month of mourning, commemorating the Battle of Karbala and processions are taken out with members mostly from the Shia community participating in them.
