Speaking on the occasion, Justice Bhuyan mentioned the remarkable efforts made by Assam Police in recent times for the welfare of children.

He also recalled his participation in a campaign, led by Kailash Satyarthi in 2012 from Dhubri to Guwahati for the cause of child trafficking and abuse.

DGP Mahanta said, “Bachpan Bachao Andolan is doing good work for the children and Kailash Satyarthi has been playing a crucial role since long in giving his valuable inputs to the states across the country for improving the conditions of children and protecting their rights.”

He said, “Assam Police are dedicated to the cause of children. Whether it is children in need for care and protection or children in conflict with law, we as a society and especially the police have to be more sensitive to issues of children.”

“Keeping that in mind the police are working on child protection initiatives with support from the UNICEF and organisations like UTSAH, Bachpan Bachao Andolan and others,” Mahanta said.

Dr. Rashmi Sarmah of Bachpan Bachao Andolan, while addressing the gathering said, “BBA is fortunate to be part of the Assam Police’s efforts to create a better society for children.”

She added, “Our founder, Kailash Satyarthi has one noble message for all, ‘Do your bit for children’ and that is what we the BBA team is doing.”

“When all of us make our small little efforts to make things better for children, the society as a whole shall transform,” Dr Sarmah added.

Constructed under the Assam Police’s Moitree project, the new Rangiya Police Station was inaugurated by chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal in 2019.

With support from the DGP Mahanta, Bachpan Bachao Andolan has furnished the child-friendly corner as per the guidelines set by the National Commission for Protection of Children.

The team also supports government machinery in child rights issues.
