The Darrang district has reported a deadly incident of car-lifting with the murder of a car driver and then lifting of the vehicle driven by him.

Darrang Police has identified the body of the car driver as 24-year-old Rafikul Islam, son of Sabaruddin Ali, a resident of Sarthebari in Barpeta district.

The body was recovered beneath a bridge at Kharupetia along the National Highway 15 on Thursday.

Talking to Northeast Now, officer-in-charge of Kharupetia police station, police sub-inspector Abhijit Kakati termed it a case of highway car hijacking, dacoity and murder.

“The victim was a driver and it is a case of hijacking, dacoity followed by murder. Post-mortem has already been done and we are investigating it for clues to nab the miscreants.” said officer-in-charge Kakati.

The body of the car driver, with both of his hands and feet tied with a gamosas, was recovered in the morning beneath the bridge at Nimtoli just crossing Kharupetia town.

Darrang district has witnessed several incidents of vehicle hijacking and robbery at night along the National Highway.
