Guwahati: The Assam Cabinet has approved a Rs 50,000-crore development package aimed at boosting infrastructure, welfare programmes and long-term capital investment across the state, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced.
The funding will be mobilised through the state’s own resources, assistance from NABARD, and various Central government schemes. The package will cover a wide range of sectors, with major allocations planned for housing for tea garden workers, upgrading schools and colleges, student welfare initiatives, women’s markets, and hostels for women.
A substantial share of the investment will go towards strengthening flood-control infrastructure, including anti-flood embankments, as the state continues to face recurring floods.
The package will also support improvements in primary healthcare facilities, Anganwadi centres, road connectivity and electricity networks. The government intends to channel funds into industrial infrastructure as well as other essential public facilities to support economic activity.
In a separate decision, the Cabinet approved Rs 600 crore for establishing a Proton Beam Therapy facility at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). The advanced cancer treatment centre is expected to expand access to specialised oncology care and, according to the government, will be among the first facilities of its kind in India.
Sarma said the government’s priority was to undertake long-term investments that strengthen public infrastructure, expand welfare delivery and improve essential services across Assam.
