Musician Anurag Saikia will soon launch his dream project that will have the Macedonian Symphonic Orchestra recording Borgeets

National Award-winning musician of Assam Anurag Saikia will soon launch his dream project that will have the Macedonian Symphonic Orchestra recording Borgeets of Assam.

“My aim was to bring together two strains that already complement each other,” reports The Indian Express quoting Saikia.

“It’s not fusion, you can call it a collaboration. Never did I say that I wanted someone jumping up and down with a guitar, singing a Borgeet,” he added.

“The essence of the world today is about collaboration,” Saikia further says.

Anurag Saikia in April travelled to Macedonia to get two Borgeet, Are Kompito and Faagu Khele, recorded by the world-renowned FAME’s Macedonian Symphonic Orchestra.

“The vocals by Assamese singers will be set to music by the orchestra,” Saikia further informs adding that he will upload the finished project on his Youtube channel in December.

Saikia further informed that this has been his dream project and it took off in 2018.

“Nowadays when a Borgeet is performed, a very few instruments are used: There will be the khol, a banhi and a kind of violin,” he said.

“When I used to see the performances as a kid, I would wonder, what if this was performed to a thousand violins?” he further added.

Borgeets are a type of Assamese devotional songs that were created by Srimanta Sankardeva and his disciple Madhabdeva in the 15th century.

Several studies and research have revealed that Borgeet, has distinct elements of classical music even though it is yet to be recognised as a classical art form by the Sangeet Natak Akademi.
