Residents of Barbaruah gheored the Dibrugarh police station on Saturday after the body of a person identified as Latu Dihingia was recovered from the basement of Rangghar Plaza.

The shopping mall was inaugurated on Friday and Dihingia was engaged as an employee there.

The residents sought justice for late Dihingia and demanded a thorough investigation into his death.

Late Dihingia went missing on Friday after the inauguration of the mall and later in the evening, his mother filed a missing complaint at Dibrugarh Police Station.

Soon after the discovery of the body at around 11 am on Saturday, agitated public stormed the shopping mall and demanded an explanation from the manager.

Family members, relatives and other residents from the victim’s locality also arrived and questioned the mall’s owner.

The agitated public alleged that Dihingia was murdered and they demanded proper investigation of the matter and urged the police to identify the culprits at the earliest and punish them.

“My husband has been murdered. The staff of the shopping mall are behind the incident,” said Dimpi Dihingia- the victim’s wife.

“Why did no one noticed the body lying at the basement for so long. How is it possible?” she questioned.

“We suspected it to be a murder and we demand the arrest of the culprit(s) at the earliest,” said a local resident.

They also demanded compensation for the victim’s family.

“Till now we cannot say anything because the investigation is at an early stage,” the police said.

“We have picked up eleven staff members and three security staff for interrogation,” the police said.

The Dibrugarh district administration has already begun an inquiry into the incident.

“We will investigate the incident thoroughly,” Additional District Magistrate, Dibrugarh.

“We will find out whether the building has the required permissions from concerned authorities or not,” the magistrate. added

“We will also look into the security aspects of the building,” the magistrate further said.

“Till then the complex will remain closed for public entry,” the magistrate added.

The body of the deceased was later taken to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) for post mortem.
