Guwahati: The body of Ramanuj Goswami, the prime accused in the murder of his 25-year-old wife, Riya Talukdar Goswami in Guwahati’s Hatigaon area, who died in police custody on September 14 after allegedly sustaining critical injuries while attempting to escape, is likely to be handed over to his family on Tuesday following the completion of his post-mortem examination at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
Goswami’s body is currently being kept at the GMCH mortuary. His family members have reportedly reached Guwahati to receive the body, with his last rites expected to be performed at his ancestral home in Gauripur, Dhubri district.
Goswami was in police custody after being accused of killing his wife. He was being taken to GMCH for a medical examination after reportedly complaining of health-related issues.
According to the police account, the vehicle transporting Goswami developed a tyre puncture near the TV Tower at Narakasur Hill while on its way to the hospital. Police said Goswami allegedly attacked an on-duty constable after the vehicle stopped and then fled from the vehicle.
He reportedly fell from the hill while attempting to escape in the darkness, sustaining critical injuries in the process. Police personnel subsequently took him to GMCH, where doctors declared him dead.

The circumstances surrounding his death are currently under investigation. Authorities are examining the sequence of events, including Goswami’s alleged escape attempt and the circumstances leading to his fall.
The post-mortem examination has been completed, and the necessary legal procedures are underway before the body is released to the family.
