Guwahati: Eight persons have been arrested by Assam Police as part of the investigation into a case registered at Guwahati’s Hatigaon Police Station as Case No. 172/2026, filed under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

The accused are Akhtar Hussain (28), Nur Jamal Miya (36), Manuwar Ali (26), Imadul Choudhury (23), Mirjan Ali (27), Majibur Rahman (26), Ajay Ali (21) and Mirajul Ali (21).

Police alleged that the accused assaulted public servants and prevented them from carrying out their official responsibilities.

They were also accused of creating an imminent danger to the lives and safety of police personnel.

The case stems from an enquiry into allegations made by Joyshree Goswami Mahanta over residential structures allegedly built illegally and a tin wall allegedly installed on disputed land at Balijan Path in the Sundarban area under Hatigaon Police Station.

Following their arrest, all eight accused were produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court, Kamrup (M), Guwahati.

The police have asked that Mirajul Ali and Majibur Rahman be kept in police custody for five days, while the other six accused be sent to judicial custody.

The court is yet to rule on the requests.
