Guwahati: The decomposed body of a polling official, who had gone missing during election duty earlier this month, was recovered from a remote hill area in Assamโs Karbi Anglong district on Saturday, officials said.
The deceased has been identified as Cornelius Kindu. His body was found in the Rongwongwey area by local residents, who alerted the police. Authorities said the remains were in an advanced stage of decomposition at the time of recovery.
Kindu had been serving as the third polling officer at a booth set up at Sarpo Kathar LP School. He was reported missing on April 9 after leaving the polling station during voting hours, reportedly due to illness. When he failed to return to his residence in Diphu, colleagues raised the alarm.
Following his disappearance, search teams launched an extensive operation across the surrounding forested and hilly terrain. Drones were also deployed to aid in the search, given the difficult landscape, but no trace of him was found until Saturday.
Police said the exact cause of death is yet to be ascertained. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and further investigation is ongoing.
