A 12-hour Assam bandh has been called on Friday next demanding release of peasant leader and RTI activist Akhil Gogoi.

The shutdown has been called from 5 am till 5 pm in the evening.

The bandh has been called by Krishak Shramik Unanyan Parishad along with seven other organizations.

The organizations while announcing about their shutdown programme in Guwahati on Monday also demanded repeal of the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

They further demanded that Akhil Gogoi should be unconditionally released immediately.

However, the organizations further informed that fire services, medical, examinations and other emergency services are exempted from the purview of the bandh.

The organizations further appealed to their volunteers and the general public to observe the bandh in totally democratic and peaceful manner.

The other organizations that have extended their support to the bandh call are Asom Jatiyabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), All Assam Minority Students Union (AAMSU), Goria-Moria Yuba Chatra Parishad, youth body of the scheduled caste community, Asom Sangrami Yuba Chatra Santha and All Assam Unemployed Youth Organization.

Notably, Akhil Gogoi was arrested on December 16 last by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) amid widespread protests against the CAA in the State.

He has been slapped with sedition charges by the NIA.
