GUWAHATI: B Borooah College in Guwahati city of Assam has been awarded ‘autonomous’ status by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The decision was taken during a meeting in June 2024 following recommendation of the standing committee on autonomous colleges.

Affiliated with Gauhati University in Assam, B Borooah College will enjoy autonomous status for a period of 10 years, spanning from the academic year 2024-25 to 2033-34.
This status empowers the college to independently design and conduct its academic programs, evaluate students, and undertake administrative decisions in line with UGC guidelines.
A formal communication from the UGC stated, “The Commission in its meeting held on 25.06.2024 has approved the recommendation of the Standing Committee on Autonomous Colleges to confer the autonomous status to B Borooah College, Guwahati, affiliated to Gauhati University, for a period of 10 years.”

The UGC directive also requires Gauhati University to issue a notification within 30 days, officially recognizing B Borooah College’s autonomous status as per the UGC (Conferment of Autonomous Status Upon Colleges and Measures for Maintenance of Standards in Autonomous Colleges) Regulations, 2023.
Additionally, the college must adhere strictly to the regulations and guidelines laid out by the UGC for autonomous colleges.
Furthermore, the college is mandated to apply for an extension of its autonomous status at least three months before the completion of the 10-year period, ensuring continuity in its autonomous operations.
